An Animal Education Miniseries

For more than 20 years, Central Florida Animal Reserve (CFAR) has served as a big cat sanctuary to lions, tigers, cougars and other large cats.

In an effort to educate the public on conservation of these incredible big cats, Central Florida Animal Reserve has partnered up with Positively Osceola to create a free educational animal web series. Over the course of each episode, you’ll be able to learn about the residents that live at CFAR, the support that goes into taking care of them, and more facts about them!

Dr. Wiltz at Central Florida Animal Reserve

Dr. Wiltz, CEO at Central Florida Animal Reserve

Dr. Wiltz graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy and a multi-state licensed pharmacist.  He has  been studying the world of big cats since 1994 and doing hands-on work with CFAR since its inception.

Kelley Mulvihill, Education Director

Kelley is a graduate of the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in English Education and Masters Degree in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Florida.  She has been teaching for 26 years and also a 10 year veteran of the Education Department at SeaWorld Orlando.  She has been working with CFAR for 9 years.

What are your hours of operation?
Central Florida Animal Reserve’s Big Cat Encounters are available at selected times on Saturdays and Sundays. Tour availability varies according to the activity but generally run from 12pm to 4:30pm during the winter, and longer during the summer. For availability and options, visit our booking widget.

Where do these animals come from?
Some of our animals come from pet situations, some were rescues, and others from governmental agencies.  No cats at the facility were wild-born.
Why does CFAR exist?
While the actual numbers are debated, the big cat population in the United States is comparable to that of the wild.  This is especially true of tigers.  The organization exists to provide big cats a home to live out their lives surrounded by individuals dedicated to their needs.  The relationships developed through this care are used to educate the public and bring attention to the issues surrounding big cats.
What do you do with these cats?
Daily care is the largest component of our activities.  That includes feeding, watering, facility maintenance, and enrichment activities.
Is it true that you moved all the cats to Osceola County?
Yes!  Our facility is located close off 441.
