Teen Volunteers

Overview

The Conservation Corps is CFAR’s structured teen volunteer program for students seeking to complete community service hours while supporting conservation efforts and facility operations at Central Florida Animal Reserve.

This program provides a supervised environment focused on responsibility, teamwork, and meaningful contribution.

Who Can Participate

  • High school juniors and seniors
  • College students
  • Participants must be at least 16 years of age

Volunteers under 18 must attend an onsite orientation with a parent or legal guardian.

Roles & Responsibilities

Conservation Corps participants assist with a variety of non-animal-contact tasks, including:

  • Groundskeeping
  • Content creation
  • Habitat restoration
  • Conservation area maintenance
  • Visitor Center staffing during tours on weekends

Visitor Center staffing includes greeting guests, answering questions, checking in program participants, selling merchandise, answering phones, and booking potential program guests. This role is entirely indoors and requires training.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old and able to work without physical assistance
  • Signed volunteer paperwork. Guardian signature required if under 18
  • Attendance at onsite orientation with a parent or guardian if under 18
  • Provide own transportation to and from CFAR
  • Ability to work in various physical positions including sitting, bending, reaching, standing, and walking
  • Commitment to a minimum of one workday per month during each session
  • Completion of a full session to have all service hours validated
  • Ability to work well with others and receive evaluation openly
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow spoken and written instructions
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks fully
  • Free of unsafe physical or psychological limitations
  • Maintain a positive attitude

A session corresponds with school semesters and summer schedules.

Schedule

Weekdays

  • Mondays: 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm (snack break)
  • Wednesdays: 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm (snack break)

Weekends – Visitor Center Staffing Only

  • Saturdays: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (lunch break)
  • Sundays: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (lunch break)

Training & Supervision

All Conservation Corps participants receive role-appropriate training before beginning assigned tasks. Activities are conducted under the direct supervision of CFAR staff or designated team leads to ensure safety and consistency.

  • Volunteers will not be in direct contact with any animal residents
  • All activities are supervised and conducted in accordance with CFAR policies
  • Participation requires adherence to attendance, conduct, and safety standards
